Raise your hand if you feel like you are juggling too many things in your life. Now raise your hand if you have been personally victimized by Regina George. I can’t help you about Regina but I can help you move towards finding balance in your life. Balance in one’s life is an ongoing process. What may work for one period of your life may not work in another.
Life can pull us in all different directions and we may feel like we are neglecting one area of our life and another is taking too much of our attention. From children to older adults we all can struggle with finding balance in our lives, especially in this fast-paced world. Finding balance helps us find peace and tranquility. You’ll feel more accomplished and less like you are missing something. So how do we go from feeling underaccomplished and struggling to feeling accomplished and like we don’t want to rip our hair out?
In order to have balance in our life, we have to first determine what is important in it. Where are we heading? Who do we want in our life? Is school/work a priority? Do you want to spend more time with your friends/self/family? Do you feel like you don’t spend enough time with something? Are there people in your life that are taking too much away from you? Is there something in your life you can improve in? These are some questions we need to ask ourselves in order to see what is worth being in our lives and spending time on. Really evaluate what is a priority in your life. And then find ways to work on it.
If we have an overwhelming amount of things going on in our life it’s important we reach out and ask for help or let the ones around us know what is going on. If you feel like you need help with work or you feel like you can’t take on as many things as you have, talk to someone about it. Let someone know the things you need to make your life easier. Knowing when to take care of things ourselves and when to ask for help is a big factor in juggling the struggles of life. Don’t be afraid to vent or reach out to family, friends, teachers.
You don’t have to live by a schedule all week long. It’s good to have a schedule at least 5-6 days a week when you have the most things going on. Schedule time for yourself, when you are going to do homework or outside work, time with friends or family. Make a time slot for how long you are going to do something. Make time to work on your mental health. Don’t just make a schedule but make sure to stick to it. And then let yourself have a break one day a week to do whatever so you don’t always feel like you are on a constant go.
I know it is so much easier to say “oh, I’ll just do it tomorrow.” Or “I have plenty of time to get it done!” NO big fat N-O. When you procrastinate one thing, you will most likely procrastinate majority of things and then what happens? You are jammed back with so many things to do, you don’t know where to start and you want to just throw your hands up in the air. Try to take care of things when you know about it within the first couple days.
If you are forgetful, it’s okay because we are thankfully in a day and time of the little computers we carry around a.k.a our cell phones. You can set reminders to do things with your schedule. It will be hard at first to remember since you aren’t used to it but eventually you will get the hang of remembering to remind yourself.
If your room or your workspace is all cluttered, your mind will also feel cluttered. A clean area means a clean mind. It does not have to be perfect and spotless. Just in a way that it is organized and you can navigate through it. Consistently cleaning your area will give you a sense of control in your life and give you a sense of discipline to follow through with your schedule and the things you need to get done.
When we are tired it makes it harder to function. The same goes when we feed ourselves crap. Take care of yourself. Food and different nutrients can make you feel either good or bad. Not enough sleep can make us function less efficiently. Make sure you are physically taking care of yourself as much as you need to take care of yourself mentally. People always neglect sleep because they think it’s not as important or they want to fit in doing things. Sleep not only helps with concentration and healing of your body but its where you are able to process your day. I know its hard on the go but Eating healthier can help make you feel energized and able to concentrate as well. So remember that next time you are making choices about food and when to go to sleep.
Trying to find balance in your life takes discipline. You have to want things to get better. Just like a lot of things in life it will be a continuous practice.
