You ever feel like your days are just mundane or you keep having a string of bad days? Do you just want to find ways where you can make your day wind up better? You feel like stress, anxiety, depression, negative energy has a habit of consuming your day.
You may not have control over the things that happen to you but you do have control over how you react and how you want to deal with those negative things. So what are some things that can help make your days better?
I know, I know we are all guilty of this. It’s so hard not to since social media and checking emails and texts can be so addicting. But going on your phone first thing in the morning can set you up for a stressful day. Experts say notifications stress us out and people that pay attention to their phones and notifications less have a more productive day. If we look at our phones first thing in the morning, it starts us off with that urge to keep wanting to pick up our phones.
A professor at Stanford, Robert Sapolsky calls it the”magic maybe.” When you look at your phone maybe there will be a text or notification and maybe there won’t be. When it does show up you get a spike in Dopamine, a pleasure chemical in our brain. Since it is a short-lived feeling, you will want to keep fulfilling that urge to look, to get that spike again. That, in turn, hurts our day and doesn’t help us be in the moment and get what we’d like to get done. So try not to be on your phone so much especially not first thing in the morning!
Waking up first thing and writing what you are grateful for is a surprisingly helpful tool to start a better day. Thinking and writing out things you are grateful for helps your mind reach a more grateful positive mindset. It makes you feel good to remember the things you DO have rather than don’t. What are the things that happened that you are grateful for?
You might find yourself struggling at first but as you start to get going you’ll find more and more things you are grateful for. Little things you don’t even think about like running water or shoes on your feet. Even if you just list a couple things, that is still helpful. It also is helpful to write them at night if not in the morning. Writing out the things you are grateful that happened during the day helps give a sense of calm which helps with better sleep and helps with a better tomorrow as well!
Food surprisingly has a big impact on how we feel. It gives us different vitamins and minerals and also when we eat like crap we feel it too. The different things we put in our body have different impacts on our mood and overall general feeling. When we make healthier food choices we tend to have a clearer mindset which helps our day! You don’t have to go all plant-based, vegan air only diet. Just try to switch soda with water! Really contemplate if eating a cheeseburger every day is really helping you or hurting you.
This is good for everyone but especially for anyone that has a lot of self-worth and self-hate issues. Affirmations are emotional support or encouragement towards yourself. You tell yourself good things about yourself and the day or you tell yourself things you want to be or how the day is going to go. “I am strong. Today is going to be a good day. I am beautiful. I am loving. I am going to conquer the day!” You might think this is stupid at first but the more you tell yourself something the more you start to feel it and believe it. Fake it till you make it!
Smiling is a great easy trick to trick our brain to think we are happy. Try it out! Smile right now and try to feel angry. I bet you can’t. Also, try smiling at other people! This could help make them have a better day too, just like you are trying to have. Some people may not smile back and I personally notice sometimes people don’t know what to do when someone smiles at them. That’s okay because you never know what impact you may be having by just giving them a smile. It feels good to make others feel good. It’s a win, win overall.
Things are always happening and things don’t always go our way. Little things happen like traffic or your coffee came out terrible or even you tripped and ripped your pants. We could choose to let it ruin and affect our day or we could choose to not let it waste our energy by giving a big reaction. It’s very important we acknowledge our feelings when they came through but sometimes it’s healthy to learn when to let go of the small stuff. Life coffee spilling. Is this really worth affecting your day? You decide.
I’m sure you have heard this a thousand times. Exercise really helps your mind and body. It helps us release all those good feeling chemicals like Endorphins. Sometimes it’s hard when the day is stressful to not let it get to you so exercise can be a good release. If you can’t get to a gym you can always take a little walk outside or do some yoga at home or even find a way to go swimming.
In my opinion, this is one of the biggest things that personally makes me feel good and I’ve noticed it makes other people feel good. Watching someone close to you feel your appreciation and love is a heartwarming experience. Life happens so fast and I think we sometimes forget to sit down and really appreciate the ones we love and the things they do for us.
Try and call or write a letter to someone who you really appreciate. It doesn’t have to be this big long letter or call. Save some for other times you want to appreciate them lol Let someone know you really appreciated this thing that they did or them as a person in general. Seeing the joy is something that could really help not only them feel good but you too! And you could do it anytime to anyone you want to express appreciation to.
You are probably like what? How does this help? Wouldn’t this make me feel worse? This something that’s helpful to do at the end of the day. The reason why this helps is because people normally can’t sleep from having too much on their mind. This causes you to twist and turn and not be able to sleep. And of course not sleeping results in a bad night and a harder next day! So if you ever notice yourself having too much on your mind and you feel overwhelmed, jot it down so you can get it out of your mind. If it’s something you didn’t get to accomplish that day, write it out and you can try to get it done tomorrow. It’s something that is already on your mind, you just need to get it out.
I’m someone who’s brain is always all over the place and I always have constant things on my mind. Jotting things down has really helped me get out what’s on my mind and move onto the next thing. This is also good if you have a poor memory. It helps me come back to it later and remember that’s something I wanted to take care of.
